Luther N. backs out of Aurora C. game

The Aurora Christian football team has this weekend off - but the Eagles would rather not have it that way.

The Eagles' Week 8 opponent, Luther North, chose not to play in the Private School League contest that was supposed to take place at Aurora Christian tonight on Senior Night.

The reason? Most of Luther North's players decided they didn't want to play anymore. On Monday, the team wanted to call it quits. The coaches told them to sleep on their decision, but only 7 players came back the next day.

Luther North Athletic Director Dave Grim, who failed to return a call back to the Daily Herald, informed Aurora Christian AD Don Davidson's voice mail late Wednesday and the Eagles did not get the message until Thursday morning.

"That's not right," Aurora Christian coach Don Beebe said. "They can't do that to the teams and players. Why Week 8? Why did they wait so long?"

Beebe tried to make the situation right Thursday morning by looking for a local JV team who could play the Eagles, and found Neuqua Valley interested in the offer. The IHSA, however, said they could play, but the scores and stats would not count. Concerned with risking injuries to the players, Beebe decided against it.

Beebe also said the IHSA said it couldn't make Luther North play, either. The Eagles are going to write a letter to have the IHSA to consider filing a sanction on Luther North for breaking the contract with them. They plan on having a meeting with the board in a few days to discuss the matter.

It probably didn't help that the Wildcats are 0-7 this year next to an Aurora Christian team that is 7-0 and beat them 56-0 last year.

"You'd hate to think that is the reason they didn't want to play," Beebe said.

In addition to having Senior Night postponed until the first round of the playoffs, Eagles star quarterback Jordan Roberts has to wait another week to attempt to break the state passing yardage record. He needs just 101 to add to his 8,207 career total which he has tallied since his freshman year.

What better night to accomplish this at home on Senior Night. Now that won't happen. The Eagles will soon face better competition, as they will join the new Suburban Christian Conference next year.
