'Watch the crossings' a good lesson

"Watch the crossings" were the last words my kindergarten-teaching mother spoke to her four kids as they left for a Chicago years ago. They came to mind Sunday as I caught the 8:54 a.m. train to go to church with my "Chicago daughter."

I witnessed a very serious incident at Wheaton Station. While the gates were down, a woman got out of a car on the south side of the tracks and ducked under the gates. Looking at my watch it was just 12 seconds before she appeared north of the 8:54 which was stopping. (The engineer blew his horn.) The fine would have been costly, had a policeman been there. But imagine the cost had she been hit.
