Make life less scary for shelter animals

October is known as the scary month of Halloween and goblins, but life can be pretty fearful, too, for orphaned pets with no home or family to care for them.

This October is "Adopt-A-Shelter-Pet Month," and photos of adoptable dogs and cats at our local Animal House shelter are on display now at the Huntley Area Public Library, 11000 Ruth Road. The library is also collecting donations of pet food and supplies for Animal House Shelter, Inc., a volunteer-run pet rescue and adoption center on Ernesti Road.

This Saturday, Oct. 18, Animal House will hold a volunteer meeting and orientation from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Huntley American Legion Hall, 11712 Coral Street. Interested volunteers and "foster families" are invited to learn how you an help. There will be snacks and door prizes, too. Call (847) 363-2996 or email: volunteer@animalhouseshelter.com.

Friends celebrate: Next week, the Friends of the Huntley Library will celebrate $100,000 in fundraising success.

The all-volunteer group has held book sales, holiday basket auctions, and other projects to support library operations, including donations of a puppet stage and puppets, quilts for children's reading programs, an Ellison die-cut machine and dies, projectors, key ring library cards, window shades, computers, a portable defibrillator and other needed equipment.

The group has also sponsored public programs and contributed to the building fund.
