Halloween happenings

Maybe you love hunting for the perfect costume.

Or surrendering to haunted house scares.

Of course, this month brings one perk that almost everyone can agree on: candy.

Whatever summons your Halloween spirit, now is the time to find it in DuPage County. Starting this weekend, Halloween events swing into full gear with traditional park district trail walks and dances, as well as a few new attractions for children and grown-ups seeking fall fun.

Some popular events, like the Wheaton and Lombard Jaycees haunted houses, will raise money for charitable causes. This year, the Wheaton Jaycees will collect nonperishable food items and donate a percentage of the profits to the Milton Township Food Pantry, which is especially in need of donations.

The Lombard Jaycees will host a blood drive during its children's matinee on Saturday, Oct. 25. Traditionally, the group also uses proceeds to provide Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets to low-income families in the village.

But this year's newest attraction is Hotel Massacre, a 16-room haunted house now open in West Chicago. Brian Maddaleni, the haunt's co-owner, said it offers theatrical frights that keep consistent with the spooky hotel theme.

"In other hotels it's a room of clowns, and then another room, but it's just a different scare every time you turn the corner with no correlation," he said.

The other feature that sets Hotel Massacre apart, Maddaleni said, is the actual ghost of a young boy who owners believe still lives in the 100-year-old barn where the haunted house is setup. Visitors can ask about his legend if they stop by this season.

Approximately 1,800 people showed up to check out Hotel Massacre's grand opening earlier this month. Maddaleni said he expects an even bigger crowd - of ladies, most likely - when reunited heartthrob band New Kids on the Block visit the haunt for a VIP meet and greet on Thursday, Oct. 23. Hotel Massacre also will feature appearances by B96 FM personalities Stylz and Roman on Friday, Oct. 17, 23 and 31 and Saturday, Oct. 24.

So if celebrities, hard-core scares and charity events still aren't fulfilling your Halloween fix, check out the Daily Herald's expanded listing of events for this holiday to find what fuels your fright.
