Briefs: Traffic squeezes coming

Traffic will be reduced to one lane for several days beginning Friday, Oct. 17, for geotechnical borings on Big Timber Road, between Route 72 and Powers Road near Gilberts. Similar work will be done on for several days beginning Monday, Oct. 20, on Allen Road west of the bridge over Hampshire Creek near Hampshire.

Get laced up

The first-ever Cal's All-Star Angel Foundation 5K race will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Sports Core of Thornwood, 850 Thornwood Drive, South Elgin. The unsanctioned race also will include a two-mile walk and several fun runs for kids. To register, visit calsangels.org. The foundation was formed by the parents of Cal Sutter, a 13-year-old from South Elgin and all-star baseball player who died in 2006 of leukemia.

ECC kicks off visiting chef series

Leon Trevino is the opening guest chef of this year's Elgin Community College Distinguished Visiting Chef Series. Trevino, executive chef of Sage Bistro in St. Charles, will spend Tuesday, Oct. 21, lecturing and working with culinary students to prepare a dinner to be served at 6:30 p.m. at the Spartan Terrace Restaurant, in the Culinary Arts Center on the college's Main Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive Elgin. Reservations are $60 per person and available by calling at (847) 622-0300 by Friday, Oct. 17.

Huntley student wins honor

The National merit Scholarship Corp. has named Huntley High School student Joy Ayemoba an Oustanding Participant in the 2009 National Achievement Scholarship Program. The program recognizes academic achievement among black high school students. To qualify for the program, students have to take the PSAT, an standardized exam that tests verbal, math and reading skills. Ayemoba was one of about 3,100 Outstanding Particpants out of more than 150,000 students competing in the program this year.
