Aurora man charged after fleeing shooting scene

An Aurora man has been charged after fleeing a shooting scene in his vehicle and leading police on a car chase late Sunday night.

Jesus Avila-Rodriguez, 28, of the 500 block of S. Spencer Street, was charged late Monday with armed violence, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery.

All the charges stem from a verbal argument he had with partygoers late Sunday during a get together on North Ridge Street.

Police said Avila-Rodriguez left that party after a verbal argument with guests, but returned a short time later with a gun and threatened partygoers.

People at the party wrestled the suspect to the ground, officials said, but during the scuffle, the gun discharged. The bullet did not hit anyone, police said.

After Avila-Rodriguez fled the party, witnesses gave officers a description of the offender and the vehicle he was driving.

Moments later, police saw Avila-Rodriguez's vehicle on New York Street at Broadway Avenue stopped at the traffic light for westbound traffic.

Upon seeing officers nearby, the suspect vehicle allegedly fled westbound on W. New York Street with officers giving chase.

The suspect vehicle crashed into a light pole at Lake and New York streets as he was attempting to turn onto Lake. Additionally, the handgun believed to be used in the offense was recovered along the path of the chase.

Avila-Rodriguez was taken into custody at the scene by officers, but was transported to Provena-Mercy Hospital in Aurora due to injuries sustained in the above accident. He was later transferred to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove for further treatment of his injuries.

Avila-Rodriguez is currently listed in stable condition and under police guard. No one was injured as a result of the above shooting.

Police are asking anyone with additional information in regards to the above shooting to contact detectives at (630)801-6686.
