1 in custody following Aurora shooting

Aurora police have a man in custody after he allegedly fired a bullet into a wall during a crowded party late Sunday night and then fled from officers.

Sgt. Tom Kearby said the suspect, who he did not name, was attending a party on North Ridge Street when he got into a shouting match about 10 p.m. The man has not yet been charged.

The suspect left the party following the argument, Kearby said, but returned a short time later with a gun and began threatening people.

Partygoers wrestled the suspect to the ground, Kearby said. During the scuffle, the gun discharged. The bullet did not hit anyone.

The man left after the gun fired and took off on Ridge Road, while people at the party phoned police, Kearby said.

About 30 minutes later, the car was spotted on Lake Street where the suspect led police on a short high-speed chase, Kearby said.

The man crashed his vehicle into a utility pole at the intersection of York and Lake streets at 10:27 p.m. ending the chase, Kearby said. A gun was recovered at the scene.

The suspect was transported to Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora.

Kearby said the incident remains under investigation.
