Hazardous waste collection:

Carol Stream residents can dispose of household hazardous waste when the village and DuPage County sponsor a collection from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Carol Stream Sanitary Treatment Plant, 245 North Kuhn Road. Residents are encouraged to bring oil-based paints, thinners, chemical cleaners, old medicines, antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, kerosene, weed killers, insecticides, pesticides, adhesives, hobby chemicals, household batteries and similar products. Other items that will be accepted are fluorescent and other high-intensity discharge lamps, unwanted pharmaceuticals, mercury and mercury-containing products such as thermometers and older thermostats. Items that won't be accepted include explosives, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, medical waste, sharps, agricultural chemicals, propane tanks, lead acid auto batteries, latex paint and all business wastes. Spa to open in Lombard:

Asha SalonSpa Collection will open its largest flagship Aveda Lifestyle SalonSpa in early November at the Shops on Butterfield in Lombard. The more than 10,000-square-foot salon will not only provide all the features of a typical day spa but also will feature "kid's care" services. It will offer spa services such as massage, facials and manicures and pedicures but also yoga, lifestyle workshops and group gatherings. Naperville plans workshop:

Naperville's police and fire departments will provide crime and fire prevention information at an educational workshop from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at Safety Town, 1320 Aurora Ave. The event, part of Public Safety Month, aims to educate residents on how to decrease their chances of becoming a victim of a crime or fire. Attendees can learn about home and car burglary prevention as well as personal safety in a variety of situations. No registration is required. Gallery Y of Lombard, 112 W. St. Charles Road, will hold A Fall Peek at Spring Show Oct. 24. The public reception, which will be from 6 to 9 p.m., will feature metal works of Lombard artist Lars Eikens. It aims to give art-lovers an idea of what to expect at the juried DuPage Invitational Sculpture & 3-D Art Show to be held May 9 in Lombard's Lilacia Park.
