Mainstream press tries to be balanced
I just finished reading the letter from Frank Gabl of Prospect Heights taking the Daily Herald to task for trying to address the issue of media bashing during the Republican convention, and I cannot believe they are still strumming that old saw.
All of the media conglomerates are owned by Republicans. Fox News is completely in the hands of the Republican Party.
What more does he want? Why do these people think that every newspaper in the country should publish lock-step 100 percent in favor of everything the Republicans do and want?
Is this their definition of democracy?
Why is it you never hear this complaint about unfairness from the Democrats when it's been proven by regular surveys that the Republicans get the long end of the straw when it comes to everyday coverage.
How could it be otherwise, given the constraints applied by the people at the top?
All I can say is, thank God we still have an objective newspaper like the Daily Herald that at least tries to remember that we live in a democracy and realizes that all sides of any issue need to be told so the reading public can make an informed decision based on their open-minded conclusions garnered from factual, non-biased reporting.
Bashing the messenger for the bad decisions of either party is not the stuff of good government.
The Daily Herald was absolutely right in its criticism, and I'd say the same thing had it occurred during the Democratic convention, and we were taken to task for the same infraction.
At least the so-called "liberal" press tries to be fair and unbiased; the Republican rags don't even bother to try.
