More international events at ECC
Elgin Community College and United Students of All Cultures, a student organization, will host International Week Oct. 13-16 with a wide variety of events celebrating cultural diversity.
The event, called "One World, One Dream," begins at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, with a presentation by ECC President, Dr. David Sam in the Jobe Lounge located in the Student Resource Center.
Other events include:
Monday, Oct. 13: The United Students of All Cultures International dance troupe presents a traditional Cambodian dance called the Blessing Dance from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in the SRC Jobe Lounge. Free.
•International Fashion Show: Sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa honor society and USAC, this event showcases fashions from around the world. Event is from 11 a.m. to noon in the SRC Lounge. Free.
Tuesday, Oct. 14: "What You Always Wanted to Know About Intercultural Business Communication Skills." Learn how to develop keen professional communication skills to help you succeed in business and beyond, presented by Career Services from 11 a.m. to noon in the SRC Alumni Room. Free.
•Spanish Dancing Rhythms: The ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater presents Spanish music, song and dance through a variety of innovative Spanish ballets, traditional folkloric suites and fiery flamenco dramas from medieval times to the 21st century. Presented from noon to 12:45 a.m. at SRC Hub Lounge. Free.
•"Persepolis": See this film about life during the 1979 Iranian revolution. A discussion follows the film. Event is from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Advanced Technology Center Auditorium. Free.
Wednesday, Oct. 15: Taste of All Cultures. Spend the lunch hour at ECC and experience cuisine and music from around the world from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at SRC hallways. Cost varies.
•International Dance Lessons: Spice up your dance moves. Learn how to dance various Latin dance styles with dance instructor Celia Lopez from noon to 1 p.m. in the SRC Jobe Lounge. Free.
Thursday, Oct. 16: International Student Panel Discussion. Students representing various ethnic backgrounds will share their perspective on cultural differences as compared to the U.S. regarding education, family, work, communication and lifestyle from 11 a.m. to noon in the SRC Alumni Room. Free.
•Cultural Music Extravaganza: Live Reggae and Trinidad Tobago by the Tropical Experience group from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the SRC Hub Lounge. Free.
•"Hotel Rwanda": Based on a true story, this 2004 film depicts a hotel manager's efforts to save the live of more than 1,000 refugees during the Rwandan conflict. A discussion follows the film. Event is from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the ATC Auditorium. Free.
