Elgin women voters examine electoral college

Does the current system for electing the President of the United States serve democracy or is there a better way?

The Elgin Area League of Women Voters will examine this question in a discussion of the National Popular Vote movement on Thursday, Oct. 16.

The National Popular Vote movement feels that the shortcomings of the current system stem from a "winner take all" rule that awards all of a state's electoral votes to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in each state, causing campaigns to focus efforts only in a handful of closely divided "battleground" states. This can mean that voters in a majority of the country are ignored in presidential elections.

The public is invited to join in the discussion about this movement and why Illinois is one of four states to already pass this legislation. The event is co-sponsored by Gail Borden Library will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 16 at the library, 270 N. Grove St. in Elgin.
