Emergency repair for Dist. 15 school

A particular wing at Palatine's Pleasant Hill School has a reputation for roof leaks and water damage.

Last month, the usual trickles graduated into "gushing water" in one classroom, said Assistant Superintendent for Business Rebecca Allard, prompting the Palatine Township Elementary District 15 school board to convene Friday at a special session.

The board approved spending $152,500 in emergency life-safety measures to repair the roof. The lowest of four bids was accepted and work will start soon.

The hardest hit classroom essentially has to be gutted, requiring new carpet, paint and ceiling tiles. In all, temporary repairs will total nearly $5,000, Allard said.

"After that expense, we want to make sure there's not another situation like the one at Pleasant Hill," Allard said.

Students in the eight affected classrooms will be relocated in shifts to other parts of the school. Administrators expect Elk Grove Village-based A-1 Roofing to complete work by mid-November.
