Fischer's choice is Charleston

Megan Fischer, an all-area guard-forward who was one of the Mid-Suburban League's top scorers after averaging 17.8 points last winter, has made a Division I verbal commitment to play for the College of Charleston in South Carolina.

"They (Charleston) think she is a pretty good player," said Hawks coach Mike Nocella. "I know she will give it her all and work really hard for them."

Nocella, who will begin his third season as the Hawks coach after guiding them to 21 wins as a year ago, said it was always Fischer's goal to play Division I basketball.

"I encouraged her to make the decision before her senior season started," said Nocella, who also coached Division I players Gabrielle Cottrell (Manhattan College) and Marie Baker (Eastern Illinois) when he served as Prospect's varsity coach before taking over at Hoffman. "This way, she can sit back, have fun and enjoy her final high school season."

Last season, Fischer also led the Hawks with 7.8 rebounds per game.

Nocella believes she would be play either the 3 or 4 small forward in college.

Fischer has scored 1,008 points for her high school career, including 515 as a junior.

She was second on the team last year with 62 assists and 57 steals.

She also made 107-of-119 free throws (90 percent). She made 35 in a row at one point (tied for fourth on the all-time list for Illinois girls basketball).
