Teen arrested in beating of fellow Dundee-Crown student
Carpentersville police made an arrest Wednesday in an Oct. 1 attack that left a 16-year-old Dundee-Crown High School student from Algonquin with a concussion and other injuries.
Eric D. Carney, 17, of 11 Oakcrest Drive #2, Carpentersville, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery in connection with the beating on school grounds, police said.
Besides a concussion, police said the victim suffered a possible broken nose, damaged vision and will need continued medical care for his injuries.
The boy told police said he was on an outdoor stairway at the high school about 3 p.m. Oct. 1 when he encountered Carney and another male.
Carney, who according to reports was wearing a white bandanna over his face, grabbed the victim by his wrist and repeatedly struck him until he fell down the stairs, police said.
While the victim was on the ground, police said, he was kicked and hit repeatedly.
Numerous students witness the incident, which also was recorded by the school's video surveillance system, police said.
Carney and his friend were detained by school personnel, police said, and both gave written statements admitting they took part in the incident.
Witnesses also were asked to write statements about what they had seen.
When Carney was arrested he said his motive was to rob the victim of his money, police said.
Carpentersville police said it took a week to make the arrest because the victim initially was unable to identify Carney and they wanted to be sure they got the right person.
A second suspect, a juvenile, was being questioned by Carpentersville police Thursday afternoon. If charged, he will be turned over to juvenile court services.
Carney posted a $1,500 bond Thursday and was released with an Oct. 17 court date at the Kane County Judicial Center.
