Glenn Westlake teacher makes math fun

Data. Just the sound of the word can be unappealing, especially to young students.

Sixth-grade teachers at Glenn Westlake Elementary School recognized that and created an exercise designed to tackle it.

Instead of finishing their unit on graphing in a classroom, writing on paper, students worked outside. On blacktop. With chalk.

"We wanted to make math fun," teacher Christine Schrom said.

Each student was given information about toys, people, and how much people like each toy. Then they were charged with condensing that information in such a way that it was easy to understand.

Schrom said the best part was that any mistakes easily were wiped away. It's one of the benefits of working with chalk.
