Waukegan police arrest man who tried to run over officer
A 25-year-old man was arrested by Waukegan police Wednesday morning after authorities said he attempted to run over an officer following a disturbance at an area hotel.
Waukegan police Cmdr. Wayne Walles said police were called to the Best Western Hotel at 411 S. Green Bay Road at about 5 a.m. by someone complaining a man was trying to enter the room of a hotel guest.
Upon arrival at the hotel, Wallas said the initial officer heard a female screaming from inside of a room and saw a man shouting through the door.
As officers approached, the man ran out of the building and jumped into his car, Walles said.
While officers gave chase, the man drove his vehicle into the side of a vehicle repair shop at the southwest corner of Green Bay Road and Washington, Walles said.
As police closed in, Walles said, the man turned the car and attempted to drive at one of the officers in an attempt to get away.
Walles said, in defense of himself and other officers, the officer shot at the man. The bullets did not hit him, Walles said, allowing the man to escape the parking lot.
From there, the man drove north on Green Bay Road. He then turned onto eastbound Sheeler Drive then again on northbound Austin Drive.
Walles said the man stopped his car on Austin, jumped out, and started to run.
Officers arrived on the scene and set up a perimeter around the area, Walles said. The man was arrested following a search a short time later.
Walles said no one was injured in the incident and that charges have not been filed against the man.
