Buffalo Grove residents concerned about flooding
Several affected residents were very interested in a report the Buffalo Grove village board discussed Monday on flooding in town.
The board room was nearly packed with homeowners who had to deal with the floods after storms in August of last year.
The flooding affected 12 areas in town, including residents on Beechwood and Weidner roads, St. Mary's Parkway, White Pine Road, MacArthur Drive, University Drive, Indian Spring Lane, Gregg Lane and Diane Drive, Countryside Drive, Middlesex Court, Prague Avenue, the Crossings and the Northwood detention basin.
Many residents had their own suggestions for staving off floodwaters, including an ordinance that would punish residents for not cleaning up leaves during a storm and an underground storage area on Weidner Road that would collect water during heavy rainfalls.
However, Christopher B. Burke Engineering, hired by the village last year, came up with its own ideas after meeting with residents and studying questionnaires.
Their plans, which could cost between $2.9 and $3.3 million, include fixing drainage and correcting the reverse slope driveways that bring water down to homes.
The biggest cost is for Beechwood and Weidner roads, estimated at $2.1 million. St. Mary's Parkway would be between $437,000 to $622,000.
Trustee Jeff Berman assured residents that the board was aware of the flooding that they've had to deal with.
"We know it's really happening," he said. "The board is going to look very carefully at what we need to do."
Village President Elliott Hartstein said the board will have to examine its options some more and put together an action plan.
"We want to find out what the right approach is and prioritize it," he said.

Wheeling holds health fair: The Wheeling board of health will hold a community health fair and open house from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. The fair will be held at the Wheeling Park District recreation center, 333 W. Dundee Road.
The fair will include several health services, such as flu shots, anemia tests, glucose tests, blood pressure checks, spinal screenings and chair massages.
The flu shots and anemia test will cost $25, the glucose test will cost $5 and all other screenings are free. There is also no admission fee.
