Statewide, 2,600 affected by company layoffs

Fourteen companies statewide are laying off around 2,600 workers altogether, including hundreds from the Chicago suburbs, according to documents filed with the state.

Some local companies said they are restructuring their manufacturing or development operations, eliminating jobs and attempting to relocate others.

One of the largest suburban losses is at Solo Cup Co., which is moving its headquarters from Highland Park to Lake Forest by next summer. It plans to close its manufacturing operations in Highland Park, affecting 420 workers.

Solo said in a statement that it's closing the manufacturing operations "due to improved production efficiency across its base of 13 other North American manufacturing plants and to improve the utilization of its existing manufacturing capacity."

The suburbs took another large hit with Alcatel-Lucent's Naperville and Lisle offices, where 263 workers are being eliminated through November. The Paris-based telecommunications company reported in mid-September that it would be around 250.

The company is eliminating work on an older wireless technology in favor of another newer one, said spokeswoman Denise Panyik-Dale.

The DuPage County campus has around 3,400 workers, compared to about 10,500 in its heyday before the dot-com bust in 2001. It also plans to sell one of the buildings.

In addition, Mettawa-based HSBC Financial Services said it is eliminating 214 jobs with layoffs at its Elmhurst operations and close its Franklin Park offices.

"HSBC is continually looking for ways to streamline and increase efficiencies in its operations," said HSBC spokeswoman Kate Durham. "To that end, Consumer Lending is in the process of migrating its Records Administration function from Illinois to Buffalo. This is a continuation of the company's determination to run as efficiently as possible."

Durham said that process began in August. About one-third of the affected employees have been placed in alternate positions within HSBC.

Also, Lake Forest-based Hospira, a specialty pharmaceutical company that spun off from Abbott Laboratories, plans to eliminate 97 jobs by mid-November at its North Chicago plant. About 400 workers there make generic injectable drugs and IV solutions, said spokeswoman Tareta Adams.

In 2006, Hospira said it would wind-down some operations at that facility, which it leases from Abbott through 2014, Adams said.
