Fire damages downtown Antioch restaurant

Firefighters from Antioch and six other towns, responded to a fire at Anastasia's Restaurant and Sports Lounge in downtown Antioch Monday morning.

The restaurant at 438 Lake St. sustained heavy fire damage in the kitchen, along with smoke and water damage in the main eating area. Firefighters also broke windows to vent smoke from the building. The restaurant wasn't opened yet for the day and there were no injuries.

Antioch Fire Department spokesman Chris Lienhardt says firefighters were on the scene in 90 seconds. He said five firemen were speaking to students at nearby Hillcrest Elementary School for fire prevention week. They left quickly and joined the rest of the crew at the scene, more than doubling the normal number of first responders.

Other businesses within the Lake Street Plaza strip mall may have also sustained smoke damage, Lienhardt said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, though Lienhardt said all indications point to an accident. He estimates at least $250,000 in damage to the building and its contents.
