Elgin man gets 7 years for 6th DUI

An Elgin man was sentenced Monday to seven years in prison for his sixth drunken driving offense.

Cirilo R. Goytia, 42, pleaded guilty to aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol in exchange for the sentence approved by Circuit Court Judge Grant S. Wegner. He is being credited for 51 days of time served in the county jail.

Police stopped Goytia Nov. 18, 2006, at Villa and Gifford streets in Elgin after he was seen driving a car with no working taillights. Inside the vehicle, police said they found an open 12-pack of beer with several bottles missing.

Goytia, who officers said had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, refused a sobriety test and was charged with DUI and driving with a revoked license.

Monday's conviction was Goytia's sixth on drunken driving charges. His last DUI conviction, in an October 2003 case, resulted in a three-year prison sentence, according to the Kane County State's Attorney's office.
