Teen arrested in Round Lake Beach drive-by
Round Lake Beach police have arrested a juvenile in connection with an Aug. 26 drive-by shooting that wounded a 62-year-old woman, police said.
Deputy Police Chief Rich Chiarello said the suspect, a 16-year-old male, was arrested Oct. 4 about 5:30 p.m. Police are not releasing his name at this time, but said he will be charged as an adult.
Chiarello said the juvenile is charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony. If convicted, he could spend up to 30 years behind bars, Chiarello said. He is held at the juvenile detention center near Vernon Hills on $500,000 bond.
"The investigators followed great investigative leads and we received great help from the community and witnesses," Chiarello said.
Police say the gunman fired into a "crowd of people" gathered at Brier Lane and E. Clarendon Drive about 8:30 p.m.
Chiarello said the victim, who has not been identified, suffered a gunshot wound to her leg. She was taken to Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry where she was treated and released.
Witnesses at the scene gave a description of an individual believed to be involved in the shooting, he said.
