That was then: A look back at 1906
Much has been made of the fact that the Cubs and Sox haven't advanced to the playoffs together in 102 years. If you have trouble visualizing that time span, consider:
• More than a few people in and around the ballparks then could remember back to the Great Chicago Fire or the Civil War.
• Wrigley and Comiskey had yet to be built. So had the Titanic.
• It was 14 years before women would get the right to vote.
• Radio was in its infancy; it would be another 15 years before a baseball game would be broadcast.
• Mark Twain, Harriet Tubman and Florence Nightingale were still alive and kicking.
• The suburbs were, for the most part, largely rural communities. Mount Prospect continued to fall short of the 300 residents needed to incorporate. Long Grove was called Muttersholz.
• Stamps were 2 cents, and a semester of what we now call tuition cost $24 at the University of Illinois.
