SUV, semitrailer collide in afternoon rush hour

Two drivers escaped serious injury after a semitrailer truck and sport-utility vehicle collided in Friday afternoon rush-hour traffic in Elgin, authorities said.

Elgin Fire Department Capt. Pat Hilbrich said the crash occurred about 4:55 p.m. on Route 20 just east of Route 31.

Hilbrich said the semi and SUV collided in the eastbound lanes of Route 20. He said the SUV rolled over and landed on its roof.

The woman who was driving the SUV freed herself from the vehicle before help arrived. Hilbrich said there were no passengers in the SUV.

Major traffic jams developed during the rush hour because the crash happened in the middle lanes on Route 20, he said.

Elgin police reports on the incident were not immediately available Friday night.

"The police did a remarkable job with traffic," Hilbrich said.
