Autumn Harvest, chili cook off Saturday

Time to toss those flip-flops to the back of your closet - it's officially fall.

Autumn Harvest is slated for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, at North School Park. Activities will include food, entertainment, a scarecrow building contest, pony rides, a petting zoo, a harvest hunt, hayrides, kids craft corner and more. The Arlington Heights Farmers Market will stick to its regular schedule of 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. that day but will be moved one block west of North School Park on Eastman Street.

The Harvest Heat Chili Cook-Off will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Eastman, adjacent to the north side of North School Park.

To participate in the cook off call the chamber at (847) 253-1703. All events are free.

Catch the candidates: The League of Women Voters of Arlington Heights-Mount Prospect-Buffalo Grove Area will host a candidates forum at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Arlington Heights Village Hall, 33 S. Arlington Heights Road. The forum will also be shown live and rebroadcast on the village's access channels, Channel 6 on WideOpenWest and Channel 17 on Comcast.

Doors open at 9:30 a.m. Those attending can park on any floor of the municipal garage. Entrances to village hall are found on each level of the parking garage.

The candidates for the local political races that will participate include:

• Peter Gutzmer and Matt Murphy (state Senate District 27)

• Carol Javens, Sid Mathias, Rob Sherman (state House District 53)

• Mark Walker, Christine Prochno (state House District 66)

• Dan Kotowski, Mike Sweeney (Senate District 33)

American Legion hosts Oktoberfest: The annual Arlington Heights American Legion Oktoberfest is at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11. For $15 per person enjoy authentic German food and dancing. Tickets are available in advance at 121 N. Douglas Ave. (847) 253-6632.

Time to register for those flu shots: The Arlington Heights Health Department will offer flu shots by appointment only from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, and 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Arlington Heights Senior Center, 1801 W. Central Road.

Starting this week, you can call (847) 253-5532 to make an appointment.

The cost for the vaccine is $20, billable to Medicare for those with Medicare Part B as their primary insurance. Pneumonia shots will also be available with a doctor's order for $35, also billable to Medicare if appropriate.
