Driver hurt when truck overturns

The driver of a truck that overturned Tuesday on I-290 near Itasca was being treated at Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elk Grove Village with serious burns to his face, head and hands.

State police Master Sgt. Ted Vernon said the driver, who he did not name, suffered burns from tar spilled from his truck's cargo, but his injuries were not critical.

The driver flipped his truck around 8:30 a.m., Vernon said, while trying to avoid an accident with the car in front of him. That car also was swerving to avoid another car.

"He swerved right and then tried to come back to his lane but overcorrected," Vernon said. "That's how trucks tend to jackknife. The truck is completely destroyed."

No one was ticketed in the accident, which caused morning closures in the right outbound lane of I-290.

The truck was carrying roofing material. Vernon said the tar spilled on the right shoulder of the expressway. The Environmental Protection Agency and cleanup crews removed the material Tuesday morning.
