South Elgin principal lauded
The Illinois Art Education Association named South Elgin High School Principal Melanie Meidel the 2008 Art Administrator of the Year. This award recognizes the exemplary contributions, service and achievements of one outstanding administrator in the state. The award will be presented at the IAEA conference in Galena the weekend of Oct. 24.
St. Joseph gets reverse-calling system
St. Joseph Catholic School in Elgin recently adopted the SchoolReach reverse calling system. The system lets school officials record a brief voice message and then send it to an entire community within minutes. The school plans to use the system for general reminders, school closures or in the event of an emergency, officials said. Central Community Unit District 301 adopted the system earlier this summer.
Firefighters fight breast cancer
Huntley firefighters are trying to raise awareness of breast cancer in October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Starting Oct. 1, the Huntley Fire Protection District will sell T-shirts for $15 at Station No. 2, 10590 Reed Road. Proceeds will go toward local breast cancer charities. Firefighters also will wear pink T-shirts from Oct. 1 to Oct. 10 to remind local residents of the importance of early detection.
