No fireworks from Warriors
There were lots of theatrics at Maine West's homecoming football game Friday night, including a postgame professional fireworks show worthy of the Fourth of July.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, they dropped the Central Suburban North opener 34-0 to Glenbrook North.
"We've got to learn to hate to lose," Maine West coach Chris Hare said. "We've just got to go to practice this week and get better."
Maine West (1-4, 0-1) was mostly done in by giving Glenbrook North (2-3, 1-0) short fields to work with when the Spartans were on offense. The capper was when Glenbrook North took over at Maine West's 3 after Brian Miller intercepted the Warriors' Frank Hess (13-for-30 passing, 117 yards) and returned the ball 46 yards.
The Spartans' Paul Jung (20 carries, 118 yards) scored on the next play to finish the scoring.
Glenbrook North coach Bob Pieper said he was happy to earn the shutout.
"Defense, we put a lot of pressure on them and tried to get after them," Pieper said.
Quarterback Tom Coughlin was impressive for the Spartans while passing for 170 yards and 2 touchdowns and rushing for 59 yards and another score.
"I've been telling everybody, we're just trying to get better every week," Pieper said. "We had some tough opponents early in the year, and it was tough battling in those games, but I think it made us better in the long run."
Early in the third quarter, down 21-0, Hess had a 15-yard touchdown run called back because of a holding penalty.
"That would've turned the game around," Hare said. "We've got to get better."
