Sox GM goes off when asked about Cabrera

MINNEAPOLIS - It was less than two hours from the start of the White Sox' biggest game of the season on Thursday night, and general manager Kenny Williams was hanging out in the dugout.

Williams talked about the frustration of losing the first two games of series to the Twins, but he went ballistic when asked to comment on something shortstop Orlando Cabrera supposedly said on a Chicago radio station the day before.

"I don't give a (bleep) about any of that," Williams said. "The only thing I care about is win tonight's (bleeping) game. Whatever they've (bleeping) got to do to win tonight's game, so figure it out. That's for Ozzie and the coaches to handle, all that (bleep)."

Nearly an hour later, Williams was still shaking his head over being asked about Cabrera challenging his teammates to play better, something he's done several times this season.

"He says something on the radio back in Chicago and you honestly think even one guy in that clubhouse knows anything about it?" Williams said. "You think it's going to effect the way they hit or pitch?"

Williams was much more concerned about the Sox salvaging a very big win while avoiding a three-game sweep at the Metrodome.

"I get down to the most simplistic part of the whole equation when it gets this time of year: They're scoring more runs than we are," Williams said. "Whether it's 6 more, 4 more or 1 more, you walk off the field and it's an L or a W. You simplify it to you have to hit, run, you've got to play defense, you've got to pitch, you've got to do all those things if you expect to win, and we're not doing it - bottom line.

"We controlled our own destiny and if we don't win tonight, we're not going to. Sounds pretty simple to me."

Guillen was asked several questions about Cabrera.

"People win games between the lines, they don't win games in the papers and the media," Guillen said. "You have to be careful. As long as you back it up, I think he tries to get those guys going, tries to get his teammates fired up. I'm all for it. But don't try to criticize your teammates; I'm not going to back up the right way to do it."
