Pedestrian killed by train in Arlington Heights

Metra officials said trains were delayed Friday morning after an express train hit a pedestrian near the Arlington Heights train station Friday morning.

Metra spokeswoman Meg Riley said express Northwest Line train number 620 en route to Chicago from Harvard hit an unnamed pedestrian near the station at 45 W. Northwest Highway.

The train was released from the scene and headed to the Chicago Metra Station about 132 minutes behind schedule.

She said train 620 was due into the Metra Train Station in Chicago at 8:01 a.m.

In addition, she said, trains numbered 638 and 640, both heading from Harvard to Chicago, were canceled because they were not able to make it to Harvard or Crystal Lake and turn around to pick up passengers.

However, she said, train number 642 departed Harvard at 11 a.m. and made stops along the Northwest Line to pick up stranded travelers.

She added other trains along the system were delayed about 10 minutes behind schedule throughout the day.

She added the train involved in the incident that hit the pedestrian some time between its last stop in Palatine at 7:20 a.m. and before stopping at the Cumberland stop at 7:31 a.m.

A spokesman from the Cook County Medical Examiners Office said the pedestrian was killed in what appears to be a suicide.
