Man severely injured by train in Glen Ellyn

An unidentified man in his 20s remains hospitalized with "severe" injuries after being struck by a train Wednesday night in downtown Glen Ellyn, authorities said.

Police wouldn't identify the man, who lost both his legs as a result of the incident. The train struck the man about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday along the Union Pacific Railroad tracks west of the Prospect Avenue crossing, officials said.

The man was airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Train traffic was stopped for more than two hours while investigators worked at the scene, officials said.

On Thursday, police still were trying to determine how and why the pedestrian was on the tracks.

"We're trying to dig some of that information out," Deputy Police Chief Bill Holmer said. "It underscores the need to be aware of your surroundings and be off the railroad tracks."
