The 2008 Illinois State Fair Superior Young Dairy Producer Award program was held Aug. 13, 14 and 16 in conjunction with the junior dairy show. This four-phase competition, emphasizing the youth's knowledge of the dairy industry, awarded each of the top five overall participants with a $1,000 scholarship. Locally, Matt Drendel was one of those scholarship recipients.
• Michael Drendel, Hampshire: Dairy Cattle, 3-year cow, calved between Sept. 1, 2004 and Aug. 31, 2005, second and third place; Land of Lincoln first place; 5-year cow and over, calved before Sept. 1, 2003, first place; Land of Lincoln first place; Spring Yearling Heifer, calved between March 1, 2007 and May 31, 2007, third place; Land of Lincoln second place; Land of Lincoln Reserve Grand Champion Female, Holstein; and Land of Lincoln, Reserve Senior Champion Female, Holstein.
In addition to project exhibits, 4-H members from throughout Illinois shared their talent during the annual Performance Showcase at the 2008 Illinois State Fair. Youth performed various dances and songs at the event held in the Illinois Building on the state fairgrounds on Aug. 10. 4-H members auditioned for the performance by submitting a video tape. This year, there were 14 entries selected from 57 nominees across the state. Locally, Jaclyn Armesy of Kaneville performed a piano solo in the event.
Several Kane County 4-H'ers also competed in the various animal/livestock events at the Illinois State Fair. Below is a summary of their results.
