Elgin man gets 8 years for pizza delivery holdup

An Elgin man who admitted robbing a pizza delivery driver was sentenced Thursday to eight years in prison.

Johnny L. Mitchell, 20, of the 100 block of Laurel Court, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and was sentenced in a negotiated plea approved by Kane County Circuit Judge Timothy Q. Sheldon.

Authorities say Mitchell and four other men conspired to rob an Elgin Pizza Hut delivery driver on Jan. 26.

After placing a large order from an apartment on the 900 block of Carol Avenue in Elgin, three of the men put on masks and waited for the driver to arrive, prosecutors said.

One of the men had a 9 mm gun as the delivery driver was robbed of about $70, several pizzas and the keys to his car. The driver also was hit in the head with the gun.

Authorities linked Mitchell to the robbery through a cell phone number used to place the order, prosecutors said. He is being credited for 243 days of time served in jail since his arrest early this year.
