Teen charged with car theft, attempted escape

A homeless teenager faces charges of possession of a stolen car, theft, and attempted escape from and damage to the South Elgin police station.

Bond for Marcos Solis, 17, formerly of 925 Baltusrol Drive in Elgin, was set at 10 percent of $50,000.

South Elgin police said Solis had stolen two cars: two weeks ago a Ford was taken from in front of a home on Gilbert Street in South Elgin, and police found it in Sperry Park; then a 2003 Kia from in front of a home on Washburn Street in Elgin that was found in the 300 block of Harvest Lane in South Elgin.

He led police to the car keys, which he left in a wooded area of South Elgin, and when police searched the stolen car they found items he had taken during various burglaries, according to police.

While police were interviewing him, he tried to escape through the ceiling of the interview room. Then he tried to remove the hinges from the interview room door to escape again, police said.

Solis said he hadn't seen his mother in Mexico for four years.

He said he had been living with his aunt but she kicked him out when he began to get in trouble with the police.

He said in court Tuesday he was not a citizen and if he was deported, he would be able to see his mother again.

He was taken Tuesday to the Elgin lockup where he would spend the night while Elgin police were deciding what charges they were going to ask the Kane County State's Attorney's Office to bring against him, police said.
