Palatine warns after string of kitchen fires
The Palatine Fire Department is issuing safety reminders for residents after responding to three kitchen fires this month alone.
All the fires, which resulted in burn injuries to two people and more than $11,000 in damage, were caused by grease or oil igniting in a pan while cooking.
The department was also called for two oven fires, which didn't cause any significant damage because both residents correctly turned off the ovens and closed the doors, depriving the fire of oxygen.
Authorities offer the following tips:
• Don't try to extinguish a grease fire with water. Instead, turn off the stove and use a lid to cover the pan and smother the fire. Baking soda can also be used.
• Don't attempt to move a burning pan.
• Don't wear loose clothing while cooking, and don't keep cloth near a stove.
• Don't leave a stove unattended.
• Don't leave pan handles within a child's reach.
Keeping a multipurpose, ABC-rated extinguisher handy in the kitchen - and knowing how to use it - is also recommended.
Should a fire grow out of control or beyond the pan, get out immediately and call 911.
