Freight train fire in Geneva extinguished

A freight train fire is out and firefighters just gave police the OK to reopen Geneva roads closed when a freight train fire shut down commuter and freight rail lines at the height of Monday's rush hour.

Firefighters and HazMat crews were wrapping it up about 6:30 p.m. at the scene near a Sherwin Williams paint store on Route 38. The fire closed the Metra Union Pacific West Line to Elburn as well as roads in the vicinity of Route 38 and Kautz Road, delaying rail and road commuters alike for about an hour. A Metra service advisory said outbound trains are stopping at the West Chicago station.

The Sherwin-Williams store is in a small strip mall. The tracks are to the rear of the property running southwest, behind the Geneva Motel.
