Briefs: Teacher wins award

Batavia High School mathematics teacher Neal Pleckham received the Wal-Mart/Sam's Club Local Teacher of the Year award Friday from the Batavia Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores. He received a $100 gift card for classroom supplies, and the school received $1,000.

Batavia bridge closed:

The Wilson Street bridge in Batavia will be closed from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday. Should there be a weather delay, the closure would be pushed back to the next day, starting at 9 p.m. The closure is necessary for a crane to be put into place and do work relating to the replacement of a retaining wall on the west side of the river, south of the bridge. Dunham closing delayed

Due to last weekend's flooding, the installation of a concrete barrier along the west edge of Dunham Road north of Stearns Road in St. Charles Township will not be completed today. Instead, the work will be done Wednesday. Once work is under way, traffic will be reduced to one lane from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Motorist delays are expected. For more information, call (630) 845-7875.

Sponsors for dance party

The Geneva Cultural Arts Commission is looking for sponsors for a fundraiser, "Dancing With the Geneva Stars." Six "celebrity" Geneva couples will compete Feb. 7 at the Eagle Brook Country Club. The Batavia American Legion Post 504 is looking for the general public's help in updating it's history files. It seeks names and photos of past comannders from 1974 to 1982. See new school

Williamsburg Elementary School, 1812 Williamsburg Ave., Geneva, will be dedicated at 3 p.m. Sunday. The fifth-grade students will perform music; Superintendent Kent Mutchler and school principal Julie Dye will speak; and there will be tours and refreshments until 5 p.m.
