Q&A with Nowak
1. Why are you running for this office, whether for re-election or election the first time? Is there a particular issue that motivates you, and if so, what is that? What will be your main priority in office?
I've always been a problem solver. Starting with the state budget, we need to get our financial house in order. I am looking forward to engaging with the complex issues with a rational, not ideological, approach.
2. If you are an incumbent, describe your main contributions. Tell us of important initiatives you've led. If you are not an incumbent, tell us what contributions you would make.
I would bring my experience in business finance and creative approach to problem solving to Springfield. I hope to work with other legislators to bring greater transparency and sustainability to the way we manage the state's finances and create new employer incentives to bring more jobs to Illinois and DuPage County.
3. Under what circumstances, if any, would you support raising the state income or sales tax? Please explain.
In the long term, I would support an increase in income tax if corresponding legislation provides property tax relief for the growing number of families and seniors being priced out of their homes. If increases in income tax are deemed necessary to weather the state's budget crisis, they should be created for the short term only, with clearly defined sunset periods.
4. Do you support the expansion of gambling by adding slot machines at racetracks? Do you favor licensing and building new casinos? Please explain.
I do not support gaming expansion-we have ample gaming opportunities, and our communities would be better served by the state courting more diverse employment, economic development and entertainment options.
5. Would you support giving voters the ability to recall elected officials?
I do not support the recall initiative. While it may seem like an appropriate idea for our current circumstances, setting such a precedent will allow a partisan minority to attack a future popular and effective leader. Such an event would only serve to distract from good governance in the future.
6. Did you support the suburban tax increases that were used to keep the public transportation trains and buses running without cuts or fare increases?
Yes, public transportation benefits the many residents and businesses who rely upon it in the region. The future expansion of public transportation needs greater review to provide the most equitable investment in service.
7. If you are elected, will you vote for the current party leader of your legislative chamber? Why or why not?
To be effective and pass legislation that benefits my district, I will need to work with Springfield leadership. To give DuPage County a stronger voice in the state legislature, I will have to support and work with current leadership and party members as well as striving for bipartisan support wherever I can.
8. What do you think of the idea, widely circulated, of impeaching Gov. Blagojevich?
If the Governor has been accused of a crime, or official misconduct, it should be investigated. If the investigation reveals that a violation of the law or a violation of the oath of office has been committed, then yes, I support impeachment. This also extends to any elected official who violates the public trust.
