Q&A with Kaempfe

1. Why are you running for this office, whether for re-election or election the first time? Is there a particular issue that motivates you, and if so, what is that? What will be your main priority in office?

I am very disappointed by the lack of communication in Springfield. I think my nine years as chief steward in the postal service has given me bargaining and negotiating skills that I think are needed in Springfield.

2. For incumbents and non-incumbents: If you are an incumbent, describe your main contributions. Tell us of important initiatives you've led. If you are not an incumbent, tell us what contributions you would make.

I would try to pass bills to help the environment and produce green energy for the long term.

3. Under what circumstances, if any, would you support raising the state income or sales tax? Please explain.

None.

4. Do you support the expansion of gambling by adding slot machines at racetracks? Do you favor licensing and building new casinos? Please explain.

Slot machines at race tracks would be a very good source of income. My understanding is there is still one casino license available. Use that one first and see where we are at.

5. Would you support giving voters the ability to recall elected officials?

Voters already have that option, it's called an election.

6. Did you support the suburban tax increases that were used to keep the public transportation trains and buses running without cuts or fare increases?

It is a hard thing to say, but Chicago has to be kept running; however, I would have voted for a small fare increase and a smaller tax for the collar counties.

7. If you are elected, will you vote for the current party leader of your legislative chamber? Why or why not?

Representative Madigan is not even meeting with the governor. You don't have to like Rod, but you should do the job you are elected to do, and that involves talking to the governor. No, I would not vote for him.

8. What do you think of the idea, widely circulated, of impeaching Gov. Blagojevich?

It's like fifth-grade kids crying. If he does something that is against the law, the judicial system will come into play, otherwise, don't re-elect him. Pretty simple, isn't it?
