Omitting one word changes meaning

It is important to note that in a recent letter (Sept. 8) Elizabeth Pearson incorrectly quoted Barack Obama as saying, "We are no longer a Christian nation." The correct quote from Obama's "Call to Renewal" keynote address states: "Moreover, given the increasing diversity of America's population, the dangers of sectarianism has never been greater. Whatever we once were, we are no longer just a Christian nation; we are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation and a nation of nonbelievers."

The elimination of one word can change the entire meaning of a sentence. It is therefore important to do diligent research before accepting inaccurate information from misinformed sources.
