Second woman accuses former Waukegan cop of rape

A second woman has come forward to accuse former Waukegan police officer Delatwan Haynes of raping her, a prosecutor said Friday.

In June, Haynes, 32, was charged with taking a woman from downtown Waukegan in his squad car to a parking lot in the city and raping her.

Officials said the incident occurred in January and that they have recovered a condom that tests positive for the woman's DNA and Haynes.

Assistant State's Attorney Patricia Fix told Circuit Judge Victoria Rossetti on Friday that a second woman contacted Waukegan police after hearing of Haynes' arrest.

That woman claims Haynes raped her in a similar manner in the fall of 2002, Fix said, and her story is corroborated by statements she made to other witnesses before Haynes' arrest.

Haynes' attorney, Jed Stone of Waukegan, said the new information is unreliable.

He said the woman claims Haynes picked her up in an unmarked squad car around dusk, even though Haynes always drove a marked squad car on the midnight shift during the seven years he worked at Waukegan.

Haynes resigned shortly after the first woman reported the January incident and is being held on $1 million bond.

The second woman's story remains under investigation, Fix said, and no decision as to additional charges being brought against Haynes has been made.

Haynes is charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and official misconduct.

He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted and is scheduled to go to trial Oct. 27.
