The Huntley Area Public Library opened in 1992 in a 1,500 square feet building. It served fewer than 10,000 patrons. In 1999, the current 15,000 square foot library building opened and was intended to serve a population of 15,000. Today, the library district has more than 50,000 residents and the library is still in the same 15,000 square foot building.

A library expansion would add approximately 33,000 square feet to the existing library building. There are three sample architectural drawings currently on display at the library. The concept drawings are not the final project, but were donated to the library by Steffen & Schwerin Architects, Wold Architects & Engineers, and Ruck Pate Architecture to show different types of extensions the library board could pursue if the referendum is approved by the community.

The expansion and operation of the larger building would cost about $5 per month for a home valued at $250,000. The library would add more books, music and movies, a program room, quiet areas, a larger children's room and more seating.

The Huntley Area Public Library is at 11000 Ruth Road. For more information about the library, programs or events, visit Web site at huntleylibrary.org or call 847) 669-5386. For more information about the library's expansion project visit Web site huntleylibrary.org/build.
