Changes coming to Lake coroner's office

They are going to be doing a little fixing up at the Waukegan offices of Lake County Coroner Richard Keller.

Keller said the county board's Law and Judicial Committee has approved a $94,600 contract with Boller Construction of Waukegan for interior and exterior improvements to the building on West Street, which the office has occupied since 1995.

He said the front of the building needs some repairs to the stucco walls and there is a need to freshen up the landscaping near the street.

Inside, he said there will be changes made on the second floor of the building where the deputy coroners have their offices.

Keller said the current offices are cramped, and a remodeling project will allow the existing deputies a little more space and privacy.

In addition, he said the project will create a space for an additional office in the event of future expansion of the staff.

Boller's was the lowest bid of eight submitted on the project. The other bids ranged from $98,400 to $162,944.

Annual dinner: The crisis intervention center A Safe Place will be holding its 28th Annual Dinner on Oct. 20 and the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort.

Keynote speaker will be Byron Hurt, a founding member of the Mentors in Violence Prevention program, a college-based rape and domestic violence prevention initiative for college and professional athletes.

Tickets are $75 for individuals, $700 for a table of 10, and supporter and sponsor packages are also available.

Grant awarded: State's Attorney Michael Waller's office has received a $26,000 grant from the Illinois attorney general's office to help support his victim counseling program.

Waller said the funds will be used to help provide a domestic violence victim counselor in the misdemeanor division.

He said the counselor will provide comprehensive services to victims, will encourage victims to come forward and attend court dates and will explain court procedures to them while providing emotional support.

The grant covers the period from July 1 to June 30, 2009 and will be matched by $38,370 in county funds.
