Accident closes Lake-Cook Road in Wheeling
Portions of Lake-Cook Road in Wheeling were closed for more than two hours Friday afternoon after an accident involving two trucks and a car
Police said a Volkswagen Phaeton was headed west on Lake-Cook Road around 1:30 p.m. when it crossed the center line and drove into oncoming eastbound traffic. The car hit a dump truck that was eastbound just west of Milwaukee Avenue, said Wheeling traffic investigator Joseph Dawson.
As a result of the crash, the dump truck then veered into oncoming westbound traffic, hitting the back of a semitrailer truck and ripping off the rear axle assembly, sending it flying about 150 feet, Dawson said. The truck lost eight of its 18 wheels.
The driver of the Volkswagen, whom police did not identify, was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with non-life-threatening injuries, Dawson said. One of the truck drivers was treated at the scene by paramedics.
Lake-Cook Road between Milwaukee Avenue and Northgate Parkway was closed from around 1:30 p.m. to about 4 p.m. while the accident scene was cleared, Dawson said.
