Stay safe during flooding aftermath
The dangers of floods continue even after the water recedes.
Here's how to stay safe:
•Before going back into a flooded house or basement, make sure there are no electrical hazards or other problems such as leaking gas. Shut off your utilities. Cut off all electrical appliances. Shut off water service and gas valves in your home.
•Wear gloves and heavy boots and be prepared to part with anything wet.
•If you have flood insurance, call your local insurance agent before you throw soaked items away.
•Never eat anything that's touched floodwater. Even canned goods should be dipped in a mixture of two tablespoons of bleach per gallon of water for at least five minutes. Use the same treatment, with one tablespoon of bleach, for nonporous children's toys. Let them air dry, and don't rinse after soaking.
•Keep animals and children away from floodwater. Those who have cuts should avoid floodwater. If they encounter it, tetanus shots are necessary for those who haven't had one in five years.
•Use household cleaner to scrub flooded areas, then flush with clean water. Follow by washing the area with a solution of cup of bleach per gallon of water.
•Don't drink water from a private well until it's tested. Contact your county health department for instructions.
