Elgin teen charged in sex assault on 6-year-old

Teenagers younger than 17 accused of a crime typically find themselves answering those charges in a juvenile court.

That won't be the case for a 15-year-old Elgin teen charged with two counts of aggravated criminal assault in a case involving a 6-year-old boy. According to assistant state's attorney Scott Biestek, the class X felony mandates the high school sophomore be charged as an adult for the crimes which took place between May 15 and June 15 of this year.

At a hearing Tuesday in the Rolling Meadows courthouse, judge Kay Hanlon set the defendant's bail at $350,000 and attached special conditions including a 6 p.m.-to-7 a.m. curfew and no contact with minors under 17 without supervision.

The defendant faces six to 30 years in prison if convicted.
