Wisconsin man sentenced for cocaine possession

A Twin Lakes, Wisc., man was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to possession of cocaine.

Daniel Johnston, 19, will be allowed to serve the sentence at the same time he is serving a 3-year term imposed in his home state.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney James Newman said Johnston was a passenger in a car being driven by Derrick Whitehead, 19, also of Twin Lakes, on Route 12 in Fox Lake on Aug. 17, 2007.

Police stopped Whitehead's car because it had a cracked windshield, Newman said, and the officer discovered 2 grams of cocaine in the passenger's-side door pocket.

A full search of the car revealed 15 ounces of marijuana in 10 separate bags, which Newman said Whitehead admitted he intended to sell in this state.

Based on the information from this arrest, Newman said police in Wisconsin obtained a search warrant for Johnston's residence and discovered more cocaine.

Johnston pleaded guilty last month in Wisconsin with the understanding he would receive concurrent time for a guilty plea in Lake County.

Whitehead pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana last month and was sentenced to three years on probation.
