Parts of Des Plaines River Road reopen, parts still closed

All roads in Des Plaines and Rosemont will be open by 10 a.m. today, officials said. The floodwaters of the Des Plaines River had receded enough so that traffic can once again flow through that area.

But in Mount Prospect, River Road from Camp McDonald Road to Seminole Lane -- about a half-mile stretch -- is still closed and will remain so until further notice.

The village put up man-made cement barriers with sandbags on the road to keep the Des Plaines River in check.

The barrier is designed to keep river water from reaching the homes across the street. Two pumps had been pulling water from the sewer system and pushing it into the river in an effort to keep area basements from flooding, officials said.

The barrier will remain in place until further notice, which means until the river recedes, said Mount Prospect Officer Bill Roscop.

Earlier this morning in Des Plaines, all but one road was open. Golf Road from River Road and East River Road had been closed, but was expected to be open again by midmorning, police said.

Other important roads in that suburb had been closed -- Algonquin Road, from Lee Street to River Road; Central Road, from River Road to East River Road, and River Road, from Miner Road to Touhy Avenue.

In Rosemont, all roads are open, police said. Previously, River Road, south of Higgins and parts of Higgins were flooded, said Rosemont Communications Supervisor Ed Musczynski.

Last weekend, the area was hit by record rain, which overwhelmed waterways like the Des Plaines River.
