Double DQ makes Terrain winner of Arlington-Washington Futurity
A roughly raced stretch run Saturday led to the double disqualification of Catalano Racing Stable's Jose Adan and WinStar Farm LLC's Advice from the first two positions in the Grade III $200,000 Arlington-Washington Futurity.
After multiple claims of foul and a 13-minute deliberation, the stewards awarded the victory to Adele B. Dilschneider's Terrain, who was third under the wire in the original order of finish. The official winner was trained by Al Stall Jr. and was ridden by Jamie Theriot.
"My horse had a really, really horrible trip," Theriot said. "I thought he was the best horse in the race. I think (the stewards) made the right decision. I did get bothered by (Advice) the first bump, and then (Jose Adan) came over. The stewards made an honest decision."
Jose Adan, who was ridden by apprentice jockey Brandon Meier, rallied from eighth at the top of the stretch to be first under the wire in the one-mile Polytrack race, which was clocked in 1:35.68.
In that final eighth of mile, Jose Adan and Terrain were interfered with by Advice, who drifted out several paths under jockey Rene Douglas, and then in turn Jose Adan came over on Terrain inside the sixteenth pole.
"When the same kind of thing happened to me (in another race) they didn't take Jamie (Theriot) down and put me up," Meier said. "What do I have to do to win this race? Finish third and wait for them to put me up. I just wish they were more consistent with their decisions when incidents are very similar."
The Arlington-Washington Futurity marks the first graded stakes victory for Terrain, a homebred son of Sky Mesa. The victory keeps his record unblemished at 3 wins from as many starts, and the $113,700 winner's share boosts his bankroll to $177,454 for his owner-breeder.
Zion, My Dominick James, Capt. Candyman Can, His Greatness, Ready Racer, Schleprock, Investor, Malibu Maverick and My Man Moran completed the order of finish.
Terrain paid $18.20, $9.20 and $6. Jose Adan returned $13.20 and $7.40. Advice paid $4.
Earlier in the day, Barbara Hunter's Goat Cheese took the lead in midstretch in the undercard feature, the $54,200 Claire Marine Stakes.
The 4-year-old daughter of Cozzene took the mile-and-a-half race by a neck under Theriot and paid $15.80, $5.40 and $4.60. The race originally was carded for turf but run on Polytrack after a daylong rain.
