Belittling insults to community workers

Like many Americans, I watched both the Democratic and Republican conventions these past two weeks.

I expected criticism by the Democrats of the Republican candidates' positions and plans for addressing issues facing us today.

I expected the same from the Republicans regarding the Democratic candidates' positions and plans.

While there is always the occasional jab between opponents, I was thoroughly disappointed by the remarks made by former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Gov. Sarah Palin regarding Senator Barack Obama's previous work as a community organizer.

Their belittling comments are an insult to all of us who work to end poverty and promote social justice.

Sen. Obama's commitment to improving the lives of those living on the margins of society should by admired, not scorned.
