Charges upgraded against man in fatal carjacking

Authorities have upgraded charges to first-degree murder for a Chicago man accused in the carjacking of an 88-year-old northwestern Indiana man who was fatally injured when his own car was backed over him.

The Cook County State's Attorney's office says the charges against 33-year-old Kenneth Starr were upgraded after the victim, Jacint Calderazzo of Valparaiso, died early Friday.

Police say Starr had Calderazzo's credit cards in his possession when he was arrested Thursday on unrelated charges.

Investigators say a man believed to be Starr was seen pushing Calderazzo out of his parked car near Midway Airport last Sunday and then backing over him.

Family members say Calderazzo, who was a widower, was on his way to Midway to meet an old girlfriend he nearly married in the 1940s.
